AND4 (January 8-18, 2009)

AND4 (January 8-18, 2009): Participants: GF, JA, OF and TBV

January 8-9: Good conditions to MN (for instance 970 KQAQ), WI from the evening until early morning. Excellent all band WC conditions from the morning until early afternoon, in particular California stations had impressive signals. One of the best days in AND history. 1510 KGA surprised us by showing up as early as 22:25 UTC.

January 9-10: The evening was promising with stations like 1400 WSLB and 1410 WNER noted early on. Unfortunately the night and morning was disappointing. Propagation improved slowly until by 15h UTC conditions were about as good as one day earlier. WC stations faded out after 15:30 UTC with BC signals still present after 16h UTC.

January 10-11: CJVB stayed with us until well after 17h UTC. 3 hours later we were listening to EC stations. Quite a few signals from the US northeastern states. Some DT signals as darkness moved westwards with a strong signal from 1210 KTBK Ke Buena just before they changed to their nighttime pattern. Spot conditons to ID and WA a couple of hours during the night. Widespread signals during the morning, some DT signals from MN, ND during early afternoon.

January 11-12: Some MN in the late evening (920 KDHL, 1030 WCTS). Propagation improved all night and signals were unusually strong by morning with no particular area preferred. Excellent to the WC in the early afternoon with good GY signals. One example 1400 KJDY.

January 12-13: Fabulous conditions! Strong signals early in the evening from NL. WI and MN stations noted very early. Excellent all-band signals throughout the night, morning and into the early afternoon. We are beginning to wonder if we have sufficient disk space for another 5 days ...

January 13-14: Strong and early signals from ME, 1490 WBAE was like a local at 22h UTC. Good conditions to mainly the EC during the night and the morning. Poor during the day as the disturbance caused most signals to disappear.

January 14-15: Varied conditions over the last 24 hours as a weak disturbance continues. Excellent opening to the northeastern states in the evening, ME before 20h UTC, lots of NY DT signals 30 minutes later. Then the best propagation slowly moved westwards to MI. NA stations were replaced by South American signals after 22h and were absent until the morning when we got another excellent EC opening. Poor during the day, however, WA stations very good at 14 and 15h UTC.

January 15-16: Some ME and NY after 21:30 UTC, then good EC conditions all night mixing with a few Latin American stations. Excellent and very interesting morning and day to eastern, central and even southern parts of the US. Only a few dominant stations around. Some Mexico as well like 1320 XECPN La Mexicana. We are very pleased with the conditions.

January 16-17: Again nice signals from NL, ME and NY early on with peak propagation slowly moving towards the west. Strong signals during the night and morning with WC signals much better than the previous day.

January 17-18: ME stations from 19:30 UTC, then the usual pattern with some EC, and propagation focus moving slowly to the Great Lakes. Fair signals at night. Excellent in the morning with widespread signals. AND4 is over and this may well have been an even better DX-pedition than AND3 in terms of more stations heard and stronger signals.

AND3: 16-26.10. (GF, JA, OF and TBV)

AND3 has begun. Conditions are promising with many AK and HI at good levels at 14 UTC. Participants: GF, JA, OF and TBV

AND3 report 16-17.10: Brief opening to Brazil after 20:40 UTC, 1240 Radio Sao Francisco was the first new one in the log. From 01 UTC strong opening to the Rockies and Mexico with west coast stations becoming dominant by late morning.

AND3 report 17-18.10: Every MW DXer can easily imagine a dream DX night. Last night easily belongs to that category. For starters we were served very nice signals from Brazil after 20:30 UTC. From 22:45 our attention was on North America, starting from the Great Lakes and moving slowly westwards. During that process we were treated to numerous daytime signals from the Central and Mountain time zones, later Oregon stations almost convinced us we were actually there. Brief conclusion: A superb night and morning

AND3 report 18-19.10: Again a good night and morning, although somewhat less focused and interesting than the previous day. 1400 KIHH logged Oct,18.

AND3 report 19-20.10: Great start to the night with DT signals from the northeastern US and the Great Lakes. Improving signals from South America during the night, 550 CW1 and 760 LU6 were excellent at LSR. Good morning to the US EC, poor to the WC.

AND3 report 20-21.10: WEGP was heard at 20:40utc increasing our hopes for a good night. Despite some usual MI stations around 23:00 the night was disappointing. Early morning conds were very good to Paraguay, Uruguay and Argentina. Excellent signals from eastern NA 07-09:30utc and then WC after 09:45

AND3 report 21-22.10: Good conds to Brazil and La Plata 21-00UTC. At midnight a few DT signals from CO and UT, then slowly improving conds until 04 UTC. From then and until just before noon strong signals from the Great Lakes and westwards.

AND3 report 22-23.10: Excellent to Brazil from 21UTC and until early morning. Sporadic spot conditions to NA 22-01:30UTC offered daytimers from all mainland US time zones. Later on relatively poor conds with stations mainly from the WC.

AND3 report 23-24.10: Possibly the best NA conditions this century. If it gets any better than this the last 2 nights we will not need to go DX-peditions again. Ever

AND3 report 24-25.10: Strong widespread NA signals from 22utc, at times mixing with Cubans and Mexicans. Boring during the morning. Towards noon improving with strong signals from WA, OR and CA.

AND3 report 25-26.10: Very interesting NA conds. At first many DT signals from the northeastern USA. Then a brief break before we got lots of of interesting stations from the Mountain time zone. Early morning had an extremely intense opening to WA, OR and BC. Then things changed very quickly with a strong opening to the eastern part of the USA. An excellent final day.

Thursday 24.1: AND2 (location Andöya, Norway) is now in progress. A brief check at 17 UTC had most Alaskan stations audible at good levels, even 1020 kHz was strong.

Friday 25.1: Good conditions to Brazil and Argentina 22 to 05 UTC. Intense opening to the Great Lakes at 01 UTC. The morning was uninteresting. Excellent signals from AK and AB/BC after 12 UTC.

Saturday 26.1: Excellent conditions to Brazil and La Plata during the night. Very nice NA opening 07 to 10 UTC to the Rockies and the west coast, particularly in the lower half of the band.

Sunday 27.1: Strong signals from Brazil 22-01 UTC. Widespread NA from 02 UTC with signals becoming very strong in the morning. For instance 880 offered WCBS one minute and KWIP the next.

Monday 28.1: Again good propagation to Brazil and La Plata around midnight. Later on nice signals from mainly western NA. Some Mexican stations too.

Tuesday 29.1: Excellent signals from AK/YT/AB/BC until 16:30 UTC on the 28. Uninteresting night and morning with only the regular LA and NA stations noted.

Wednesday 30.1: Weak signals from Brazil early in the night. After 02 UTC strong signals from AB/SK. Uninteresting morning with only the NA dominants noted.

Thursday 31.1: Nice signals from Brazil early in the night. Morning and day propagation was very good to the Rockies and the west coast. Ex: 1230 KSBN

Friday 1.2: Superb NA opening 02-08 with many stations on most channels. Only a few dominants audible after LSR.

Saturday 2.2: Rapidly changing conditions early in night. Maine one minute, then Brazil, then AB/SK. Overall a poor night.

Sunday 3.2: Uneventful night, then intense opening to AB/MT after 08 UTC. Yesterday was more interesting than we thought, 590 CFAR, 610 KRTA. 1420 WASR

Saturday 27.10

AND1 report Oct.27: Good conditions to Brasil from 23 to Θ2 UTC, then to La Plata and Brasil Θ5 to Θ6:3Θ. Radio Nihuil 68Θ kHz had a strong signal. Poor NA conditions with only some stations from AB and CA reachìng fair to good levels.

Friday 26.10

AND1 report Oct.26: The first Brazilians were heard at 2Θ:1Θ UTC. Then things changed quickly. 156Θ Radio Disney was noted at 2Θ:2Θ and at 21:Θ5 we were listening to 129Θ CFRW. Occasionally very good signals were heard from SK, MB and AB for the remainder of the evening and the night.

Thursday 25.10

AND1 report Oct.25: Interesting NA conditions early in the night. The most noteworthy stations were 141Θ WNER, 147Θ WNYY and 157Θ WFLR. Fairly poor and widespread conditions at LSR.

Wednesday 24.10

AND1 report for Oct.24: The first stations from Brasil were audible at 2Θ:2Θ UTC. Signals slowly became stronger and by Θ2 UTC we were thinking we had mistakenly stated good conditions to South America over the last several days.
Surprisingly condìtions improved further. From Θ4 to after 1Θ UTC we had a huge opening to North America with fabulous signals from QC in the north to FL in the south and MI in the west.
Can things get better before the next coronal hole stream strikes?

Tuesday 23.10

AND1 report Oct.23: Unstable conditions all night and morning. Many nice signals from Brazil starting as early as 2Θ:4Θ UTC. Within 1 hour stations from ME, MA, NY, QC and ON began to dominate TA fqs. Later on it was back to Brasil. From Θ4:3Θ UTC we had 2 hours of strong signals on almost all TA fqs from Puerto Rico, Venezuela, Colombia and Brasil. Examples: 74Θ WIAC, 76Θ WORA.

Monday 22.10

AND1 report for Oct.22: Nice opening to ID and OR just after midnight. 13ΘΘ KAPL strong peaks before their LSS. Good conditions to OR, WA, BC and AB continued throughout the night and the morning. 55Θ KOAC was heard for hours.

Sunday 21.10

AND1 report Oct.21: Superb La Plata conditions from 22:5Θ UTC until Θ5. Brazilians on nearly all TA fqs during the last hour before LSR. Some excellent signals from the Caribbean: 54Θ Grenada and 64Θ Guadeloupe. A fairly good opening to the Great Lakes and further west lasted about 1 hour from ΘΘ:3Θ UTC

Saturday 20.10

2Θ.1Θ. report from AND1 (69NΘ2 15E31): Poor night with some ON stns noted around Θ1 UT, then MB and SK. After Θ5 UT some nice signals from south Brasil, Uruguay and Argentina below 1ΘΘΘ kHz. 55Θ Colonia, 59Θ Continental, 6ΘΘ Gaucha and 62Θ Jovem Pan had the best signals. JA, OF, TBV and GF
